Released in 1972, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders of Mars debuted the stage character Ziggy Stardust – crafted by the legendary David Bowie – alongside his backing band, re-christened The Spiders of Mars. Born out of songs first imagined while recording 1971’s Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars ended up as a sort of loose concept album, detailing the misadventures of alien rocker Ziggy Stardust. 

Opening with the stage-setting “Five Years,” the album details an Earth with five years left – and the bisexual alien savior who has come with a message of hope for the remaining human civilization. Through tracks like “Moonage Daydream,” “Starman,” and “Suffragette City,” Bowie detailed a world rebuilt by the power of glam rock. Bowie’s message of hope was preserved by the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry in 2017.
