Creating a character freed Bowie to conceptually travel beyond the limits of the earth. The album art is a photograph by Brian Ward. It was taken during a frigged night in January 1972. Bowie stated that the influence for the album art was inspired by Clockwork Orange and the one mascaraed eyelash.
