David Bowie’s fifth album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, introduced the world to Bowie’s second stage persona: the bisexual alien messenger Ziggy Stardust. Arriving with a message of hope after the album’s first, doomsaying track “Five Years,” the Stardust character took off as a symbol of the evolving idea of glam in the early 1970s. 

Over the subsequent, 18-month Ziggy Stardust Tour, David Bowie performed and even interviewed as the alien Stardust. His backing band – Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder, and Mick Woodmansey – even took on the name The Spiders of Mars, taking roles in a loose musical mythos around Ziggy Stardust until the character’s final performance in 1973.
